The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's story begins not in a kennel, but in the royal courts of 17th-century England. The toy spaniels that became this breed's ancestors were prized companions of King Charles II of England, who ascended the throne in 1661. Known as the 'Merry Monarch,' Charles II was also a prolific dog breeder, always surrounded by loving spaniels that followed him everywhere — from state meetings to his silk-swathed bed at day's end. The English Toy Spaniel that preceded today's Cavalier originated in England in the 1600s, most likely from crosses between small native spaniels and toy breeds from Asia, and was popular across multiple European royal courts.
