A guide to revisit

What is inside the German Shorthaired Pointer

This edition combines three parts in one file. The total page count includes general content, the breed-specific section and the planner; it does not refer only to breed-specific text.

1. General foundations

A reading foundation covering home preparation, everyday care, nutrition, training and life together. These chapters are shared across the collection and provide context before the breed-specific section.

2. A section devoted to the German Shorthaired Pointer

History, profile and breed-specific care topics organized into ten chapters. Browse the list below and read a short history excerpt to get a feel for the writing style.

3. Printable planner

Pages for your records, details, dates and memories within the same PDF. Print only the sheets you need. This is not an app, and fillable form fields are not advertised.

A short excerpt to begin

From the history chapter in this edition: a short reading sample.

Long before the phrase 'all-purpose gun dog' became a marketing cliché, German hunters were wrestling with a genuine practical problem: they needed a single animal that could track, point, and retrieve on land and in water — without baying like a hound, shying from a gun report, or refusing to enter cold water. The German Shorthaired Pointer's roots stretch back to at least the 17th century, when pointing dogs from France, Italy, and Spain — generically called Hühner-Hunde (bird dogs) — drifted into the Germanic states and bred with local trackers. However, serious, intentional development of the modern GSP did not begin until the 1870s, against the backdrop of a newly unified Germany and a rising middle class that had only recently won the legal right to own firearms (a right effectively granted in 1848).
