From the history chapter in this edition: a short reading sample.

Few breeds carry their entire working biography written into their name. The Rottweiler's story begins more than 2,000 years ago, when the Roman Empire marched its legions northward through the Alps, driving herds of cattle to feed its armies. Those legions relied on powerful, mastiff-type drover dogs to keep livestock moving and to protect both animals and soldiers along the route. The Romans frequently stopped in what is now Rottweil, in the Baden-Württemberg region of southern Germany — then a significant livestock-trading hub. When the Empire withdrew from Germania in the 2nd century, these dogs remained, interbreeding with local herding stock and gradually developing into a distinct regional type respected for power, endurance, and a steady nerve.
