A reading foundation covering home preparation, everyday care, nutrition, training and life together. These chapters are shared across the collection and provide context before the breed-specific section.

History, profile and breed-specific care topics organized into ten chapters. Browse the list below and read a short history excerpt to get a feel for the writing style.

3. Printable planner

Pages for your records, details, dates and memories within the same PDF. Print only the sheets you need. This is not an app, and fillable form fields are not advertised.

A short excerpt to begin

From the history chapter in this edition: a short reading sample.

The Irish Setter traces its roots to 18th-century Ireland, where hunters urgently needed a fast, keen-nosed dog capable of working across the island's varied terrain — boggy lowlands, dense heather, and open fields — in all weathers. According to Britannica, the breed was developed from a blend of English and Gordon Setters, spaniels, and pointers, combining the scenting ability of the spaniel, the pointing instinct of the setter, and the stamina of the pointer. Their working method was distinctive: rather than flushing game, they would locate birds by scent and then 'set' — freeze in place, sometimes crouching low or lifting a foreleg — so hunters could cast a net over both dog and prey without disturbing the flock.
